hawaii siteNew Links 2004 Course Coming Kevin GiffordOn the Xbox.com message board yesterday, Microsoft announced that a brand-new golf course will soon be available for Links 2004, the online golf sim the company released for the Xbox back in November. The course will debut on the Xbox Live service sometime within the next few days; players will need to pay a one-time $4.99 charge to get the necessary files. According to David Cass of Microsoft, the course will be Kapalua Plantation in Hawaii -- site of the Mercedes Championships, a PGA Tour event taking place through January 11. "It will be exclusively available via Xbox Live," Cass wrote. "You cannot download this from the Internet and put it on a disk, nor will you be seeing it in the Xbox magazine disks." The new course marks the latest in a series of Xbox Live updates that require the user to pay extra -- a trend that's alarmed some online gamers. "I know many will question our decision to release a premium content download at this time," wrote Daryl Welsh, program manager at Microsoft. "The hard reality is that Links is a business, and part of our desire to stay in this business is to do two things simultaneously: provide those customers who've already purchased our game fresh and exciting new content, and ensure we have all the resources we need to make great new content for the next version of the game." Concurrent with the Kapalua course will be a brand-new sweepstakes, with random Links players winning prizes like club sets and Suunto golf watches.
