Kona Hotel, State Highway 180, Holualoa; 324-1155. Local workers occupy most rooms of this hillside hotel during the week, but on weekends you can rent a small one-bed room for $8, a two-bed one for $16.
It's definitely a working-class hotel, but the small bedrooms upstairs are clean, light, and airy; bathrooms are shared. Rooms 10 and 11 provide good views of the Kona Coast. Breakfasts are available upon request.
From State 11 in Kailua, take Hualailai Road (State 182) 4 miles southeast to State 180; turn left and look for the hotel 1/4 mile north on your left.
